Essentials of

Asset Building

for Trainers & Facilitators

Workshop

MINNEAPOLIS, MN

FEBRUARY 26-27, 2018

Why the Developmental Asset Message is Important

Have you ever wondered why some kids seem to grow up with relative ease but other kids struggle?

Search Institute began asking this question almost 40 years ago.

Since that time, we have collected data from more than 5 million children and youth worldwide, from all backgrounds and situations. We've developed a framework of 40 traits that are essential to young people's success, called Developmental Assets®. They are the experiences, opportunities, skills, and qualities that help young people make responsible and healthy choices.

The research has consistently demonstrated that the more Developmental Assets® young people have in their lives, the better their chances of succeeding in school and becoming a happy, healthy, and contributing member of their communities and society. They are also less likely to engage in risk-taking behavior, such as alcohol or drug use.

Join us for the energizing two-day Essentials of Asset Building for Trainers and Facilitators workshop. This training will prepare you to deliver two core Search Institute designed workshops to your own community: Everyone's an Asset Builder and Sharing the Asset Message.

Everyone's an Asset Builder introduces the Developmental Assets® framework and the powerful role of individual asset builders in the lives of youth. This workshop will help participants:

  • identify the characteristics of effective asset builders and their own personal strengths and challenges
  • understand “circles of influence” and identify those circles in which there is potential for asset building
  • make and share a personal commitment to asset-building action

Sharing the Asset Message prepares community members and groups to deliver a variety of asset-building messages to multiple audiences. This workshop will help participants:

  • discuss how the assets relate to other positive youth development efforts
  • develop engaging presentation strategies to meet the unique needs of any audience
  • download free curriculum materials to use in your own presentations

Stay an extra day to learn about Developmental Relationships + Sparks! Find out what we've discovered from looking two decades of our own data about relationships and the power of Sparks in the lives of young people.

Search Institute has identified 5 elements of relationships that help kids thrive. We have found it’s the combination of these elements that really have power in kids development, They are:

  • Express care - kids don’t care what you know until they know that you care
  • Challenge growth - sometimes kids need love plus challenges
  • Provide support - active engagement of young people to complete tasks and achieve goals
  • Share power - helping kids know they have a voice and agency over what happens in their lives
  • Expand possibilities - helping kids connect with other people and places that will expand their world.

This workshop will teach you how to implement these important discoveries in the lives of youth!
